Bobcat Soccer goes 1-1, picking up first season win

Georgia College & State University soccer (1-2-1) went 1-1, taking a loss to Valdosta State University and a win over the University of Auburn at Montgomery.

The midweek road contest against Valdosta State was a tough contest for GCSU as they took a 2-0 loss. Sarah Mason of Atlanta led the offense, rifling off two shots with one on goal.

Defender Anna Claire Smith from Evans had the only other shot on goal for the Bobcats.

Kate Richardson the goalkeeper hailing from Marietta had seven saves on the night to hold the Blazers to only two goals.

Bobcat Soccer did a complete 180 with a 5-1 win over Auburn Montgomery, Saturday. GCSU had 20 shots on goal, which led to their victory. Mason led the charge in this contest as well as she scored two goals.

Mason scored her first goal in the 44th minute of play on the assist from Baton Rouge, La., native Sydney Charles. Mason was able to get the ball up the middle on the cross from Charles on the left side of the field. Her second goal came in the 77th minute of play on, with the assist from Covington native Aralyn Everett.

Everett’s first assist came in the 40th minute of play on the goal from Newnan native Ellie Watson’s header. Everett shot, and the AUM goalkeeper knocked the bar into the crossbar where it then fell into the right position for a header by Watson. Right before that, Taylor Salvaggio from Bethlehem knocked in her second career goal. Salvaggio was able to corral the ball after Richardson punted it downfield after a save. Amanda Dewey of Johns Creek scored the other goal for the Bobcats coming in the 60th minute of play. Dewey scored her goal on an assist from the super senior from West Suffield, Conn., Alexis Bergamini. The shot by Bergamini was ricocheted off the goalkeeper and Dewey was able to get the ball and put it back for the fourth goal of the game.

The Bobcat defense held the Warhawks to only five shots with two on goal. This was the best game of the season for the Bobcats’defense as they allowed a season-low in shots.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Sept. 10 to kick off conference play at Young Harris College. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. with live stats and broadcast links available at GCBobcats. com.
