Bobcat volleyball goes 2-1 in Mars Hill Tournament

Georgia College & State University (3-3) took two wins over King University and Coker College.

The Bobcats kicked off the Mars Hill Tournament against the King University Tornados and beat them in three sets. Callie Miller of Allatoona led the team in kills with 13. Miller also added three digs and two blocks to her line score. The Bobcats also had four other players with seven kills to round off the offense.

GCSU had an impressive defensive match with three players with double-digit digs. The Flagler College transfer from Buckhead, Rachel Machovec, led the team with 27 digs. She had three total blocks and was one of the hitters with seven kills. The freshman libero from Auburn, Alanis Bernis, added 17 digs. The final player with double-digit digs was the outside hitter from Cumming,, Ally Hall, with 15. Hall was the second player on the squad with seven kills.

Senior setter from Mooresville, North Carolina, Emily Long, had 23 assists in the match to lead the team.

Freshman setter Riese Johnson from Cumming added 13 assists to round out the assists.

The next contest for the Bobcats was against Coker, in which they picked up yet another three-set victory. In the win over the Cobras, GCSU had several players contribute to the win on the offensive side. The Snead State transfer from Rome, Brooke Roberts, led the offense with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage. The next kill leaders were Camryn Carlton from Buford and Miller with seven.

Machovec, Hall, and Bernis led the defense with double-digit digs. Machovec had 13 digs and added five kills with two blocks to her impressive performance. Hall had 12 digs and six kills to help lead her team to a win over the Cobras. Bernis rounded out the defense with 12 digs as well.

Freshman setter Johnson led the team in assists with 15. Long added 13 and had two service aces. Miranda Hardin from Cumming led the team in service aces with four.

GCSU finished out the Mars Hill tournament with a three-set loss to the host team. Miller led the Bobcats with nine kills. Hall had the second most kills with seven and led the defense with 16 digs to end her impressive tournament performance. Bernis was the only other player with double-digit digs with 14.

Long led the squad with 19 assists and Johnson added 16. The setters ended the tournament on a high note with a combined 35 assists.

Bobcat volleyball is back in action Friday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. to kick off the Gulf South and Peach Belt Conference crossover tournament. The University of West Georgia will be the host team and GCSU will play them first. Live stats and video links are available at GCBobcats.com.
