Longtime Baldwin County resident and well-known musician Scott Little announced his running for the District 5 seat on the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners.

“I love Baldwin County and as an active member of the community … I feel that I can stand up and participate,” said Little.

Little grew up the majority of his life in District 5 and has a love for his hometown that rooted him to stay even in his adult years.

His mother was a teacher at Northside Elementary School until its closing and his father had a local clothing business. Little would also go on to establish himself in the community as a musician, as part of The Scott Little Band, and founded a local home improvement company called Ulterra Services.

“Since I have been able to drive a car, I have been a professional musician. But, after the pandemic, I opened a home improvement company,” said Little. “Both of my careers are local. We have performed around the county and Ulterra Services serves Baldwin County and parts of Dublin, where my business partner lives.”

Little is a believer in leadership being turned over. Outside of his professions, he was the board chair for Camp Dream, a nonprofit that offers recreational summer camp and campout programs for children and young adults with moderate to severe physical and developmental disabilities, for about 10 years and served as vice chair prior. After a long time in the leadership role, he “passed on the torch” to allow the organization to have a “fresh perspective.”

“I felt that my leadership got us to a certain point and that it was time for someone with a fresh set of eyes and ideas to offer their input,” said Little. “I moved that needle for the person before me and set it up for them to move that needle farther. That is how leadership should work to allow room for growth.”

Little emphasized he does not want to discourage the current leaders on the board of commissioners but rather take what they have done and improve upon it.

“They have served and given themselves to Baldwin County. I am grateful for that, but I think it's time for leadership to turn over,” said Little. “I applaud our representatives for their continued service. I take into consideration that very few people have thrown their hat into the ring and I want to be that person to raise their hand and say ‘I’ll take it from here.’”

Little has experience in leadership through his nonprofit work, being a business owner, and leading himself through the journey of being self-employed and working as a team with his bandmates. In addition, Little expressed that he has worked with the commission before as a concerned citizen himself and feels he has a good relationship with the current individuals on the board of commissioners.

“I feel that I understand leadership and am capable of working as a part of the commission,” said Little. “It will be about working as a team, not as an individual, and I know how to do that. I want to raise my hand to be a part of solutions.”

If elected to the position, Little aims to find out what is important to District 5. He wishes to create a “path to find out what is most important” and create a better channel of communication to better represent the district. Little affirmed that he will begin pursuing that path before he is elected.

“The greatest asset I would bring to the commission is that I do not see this as a position of power but as a position of service,” said Little. “My job would be to be in service to my district and Baldwin County. There is no power that comes with this. It is about the people.”

The upcoming candidate qualifying is from March 4-8, the primary election is May 21 and the general election will be Nov. 5.
